Knight named as new Racing Club boss

Lee Knight has been unveiled as the new Racing Club Warwick manager.

The former Redditch United, Halesowen Town and Evesham United defender replaces Ryan Cranton, who was sacked following Racers’ 4-0 defeat at Heather St John’s earlier in the month.

Knight, who will take on a player-manager role, is not expected to feature in tomorrow’s Les James Memorial Challenge Cup at home to Massey Ferguson, preferring to run the rule over his squad from the sidelines first.

However, chairman Bob Dhillon said the ability to make a difference on the pitch is what gave Knight a clear advantage over the other candidates.

“He’s got good experience at a higher level and we felt that he would gel better with the team,” said Dhillon.

“He will be able to use his experinece at the back to help us stop shipping goals and I am confident Lee can build on the excellent squad of players we have at Racing Club Warwick.”

Knight, 32, is hoping to bring in a coach with extensive managerial experience at Midland Combination level to assist him, saying the appointment would be “a real coup for the club”.

He is also confident of adding two or three players with Southern and Alliance League experience in time for tomorrow’s game.

“The league table speaks for itself,” he said. “For a club like Racing to be bottom of the league isn’t good to say the least.

“The most important thing is to get up the league to half-way and have a real go at it next season.

“The ambition of the club and the chairman is what attracted me here - it was music to my ears.

“There’s no point being in the league if you’re not going to try and win it and next season that’s what we’ll aim to do.”
