More than just kick and rush

IT may be too late for the current England team, but children in Southam have been learning the techniques that may one day win England a trophy.

Tesco FA Skills held football coaching sessions at Southam College last week to give five to 11-year-olds the chance to get active, learn new skills and enjoy the game in a programme created by Sir Trevor Brooking, who in 2007 had concerns over the ‘skills gap’ between English and European youngsters.

Birmingham team leader Jim McGettrick said: “Our aim is to develop better and more technically gifted football players but also to give every child the chance to be the best that they can be.”
