IT’S taken two and a half years of fundraising, but Wolston Leisure Centre’s new all-weather pitch was officially opened this week.
The 3G rubber-crumb surface, large enough for two five-a-side football pitches or one full-sized one has cost around £148,000.
The grand sum has been achieved thanks largely to grants from Veolia Environmental Trust, Warwickshire Rural Enterprise Network (WREN) and Rugby Borough Council.
Since the leisure and community centre was built seven years ago it had always been the plan to add an all-weather surface to the 12.5 acre site, left after the closure of the high school.
The leisure centre had been inundated with requests from neighbouring villages for a facility to enable teams to train at night. And it was worth the wait as players were delighted when the project was completed and the first sessions were held last week.
Any clubs or groups wishing to hire the pitch should call Derek Poole or Keith Ward at the centre on 02476 541212.
