Pelsall Villa became their latest victims on Tuesday, with Marc Passey’s late goal sealing a 4-2 win for the visitors.

Lee Knibbs’ team started slowly, needlessly giving the ball away and it took a good save by debutant keeper Keiran Conway to deny Lewis Perry.

However, it was Saints who took the lead when Chris Hayden’s powerful shot came back off the bar and Pawel Tomczak finished the job after Jim Graham’s follow-up had been blocked by the keeper.

Tomczak got his second in the eighth minute, stretching at the far post to poke home a free-kick and he almost got another five minutes later, but a defender just beat him to Tom Leaver’s cross.

Villa halved the deficit in the 24th minute with a scruffy goal which went in off a Saints player but the visitors restored their advantage just past the half-hour when Tomczak headed home Jamie Coleman’s long ball.

Villa pulled it back to 3-2 15 minutes into the second half and it could have gone either way from there.

But, with five minutes remaining, Villa keeper Andy Hughes, under pressure from substitute Tom Davison, kicked a backpass straight to Passey who gratefully accepted the chance.

On Saturday, Saints ran out 4-0 winners over Atherstone Town, who were reduced to ten men after captain Chris Charles was sent off late in the first half.

Saints got their break in the 29th minute when keeper Brendan Hazlett fumbled the ball and Graham steered it in from a narrow angle.

Saints continued where they left off after the interval, with Chris Murphy and Graham testing Hazlett again before Graham made it 2-0 with a back-heel from a corner.

Substitute Tomczak hit the bar from close range before Saints got their third through Ross Briscoe.

Murphy then shot home after Tomczak’s effort had been cleared off the line as Saints ran out convincing winners.

Tomorrow, Saints visit Castle Vale JKS and follow up on Tuesday with the semi-final second leg of the Les James Memorial Trophy at Walsall Wood, where they have to overcome a 3-0 deficit.
