Rock-bottom Racing to ring the changes

Lee Knight is going to give youth a chance tomorrow as Racers complete their season with a trip to Massey Ferguson.

Monday’s defeat at Alveston confirmed Racing Club will finish bottom of the Midland Combination Premier for the second successive season.

A 4-0 home thrashing of Alveston on Saturday briefly raised hopes of Racing Club overhauling their fellow strugglers.

However, despite taking a 2-0 lead in their reverse fixture, they shipped three goals in six minutes on their way to a 4-3 defeat. And, with little but pride to play for, player-manager Knight confirmed he will ring the changes.

“I’ll get the young lads in and have a look at them,” said Knight, who was forced to play in goal due to the unavailability of Racers’ five signed-on keepers. “I’ll be glad to get this season over with and start afresh to be honest.”

A Luke Fuller hat-trick helped Racers to a comprehensive victory on Saturday, with Knight blaming complacency for the defeat two days later.

“It was too easy for us. Then, for 20 minutes we switched off and stopped doing the basics.

“Their kid up front took the goals well, but we should have won 9-4 - Shane Benjamin should have come away with a hat-trick.”

Benjamin did score one, with Leon Thomas and Craig Thomas also on the mark.

However, the burly striker’s place looks under threat next season, with Knight admitting he may change his recruitment policy.

“The Alveston defeat got to me a bit,” he added. “With the players we’ve got we should be beating teams like that.

“A couple of big names turned it on on Saturday and didn’t turn up yesterday.

“Maybe the big names are not the way to go next season.

“We need a complete overhaul.”
