Rugby Town’s fading dream of a play-off place finally evaporated at Chasetown on Saturday, in a 3-1 defeat. Valley are now down in ninth place with just two games to play, so can no longer mathematically make the play-off zone.

But it brings to an end a far better campaign than supporters could have expected after their early string of defeats this season, which saw them struggling at the bottom of the table.

On Saturday, captain Steve Towers put Valley ahead in the 33rd minute against Chasetown, who equalised just a minute later and went on to add two second-half goals in the 67th and 77th minute after Rugby had been reduced to ten men. Just before half time Tom James received the club’s first red card of the season, the result of two yellows.

Chasetown, managed by former Rugby Town boss Dave Stringer, are sixth in NPL South Division, still bidding for a play-off spot.

For their last two games Rugby visit fifth-placed Lincoln United at Tuesday evening (19th) and finish their season at Butlin Road on Saturday (23rd) when they host second-placed Shaw Lane Aquaforce.
