Saints scenting silverware

Luke Fogarty bids for his first piece of Southam United silverware on Tuesday night when Saints take on Alvis at the Ricoh Arena (7.30pm) in the final of the Coventry Telegraph Challenge Cup.

In his first season in charge, Fogarty has put the emphasis on youth. However, in Quentin Townsend he has an experienced hand who will not be overawed by playing at a large stadium, with the central defender having made his debut for Wolves at Fulham aged just 20.

Saints have already beaten three Coventry Alliance sides on their way to the final but Fogarty will not be underestimating their opponents, who dispatched highflying imoSports Midland Combination outfit Nuneaton Griff in the semi-final.

Goalkeeper Jim Stott has shown how the gap between the two leagues can be bridged, having signed for Saints from Potters Green and appeared in all but two of their 46 matches played so far this season.

“Alvis are a good side and we are expecting a tough battle,” said Fogarty. “We will need to be tight at the back and take our chances, but everyone at the club is looking forward to the match.”

All proceeds go to local charities and entrance on the gate is £5 for adults and £2 for concessions.
