Ten-man Southam still have too much firepower for Copsewood

Manager Lee Knibbs described himself as “very happy” with the performance as Saints put their troubled start behind them to take the points, writes David Hucker.

“It was a good team effort, with everyone working hard, and all three strikers getting on the scoresheet,” he added.

Saints were comfortable winners despite playing the whole of the second half with ten men after Oli Manoochehri was shown red for stamping on an opponent just before the interval.

They could even afford to miss a penalty when Pawel Tomczak’s 83rd-minute effort was well saved by the excellent Scott Furlong, although the Saints striker did put the match beyond doubt with a fine solo effort three minutes from time.

Southam, who handed a debut to ex-Daventry Town midfielder Joss Holford, took the lead in the 12th minute when Simeon Smith latched on to a through ball to draw Furlong and beat him with a shot low down to the keeper’s right.

It was soon two as Smith turned provider, outpacing Hunt to send the perfect cross to the unmarked Manoochehri.

Despite being a man down, Saints continued to take the match to Copsewood after the break and Tomczak twice had good chances, with the first going agonisingly wide of the far post and the second drawing a good save from Furlong.

The visitors pulled a goal back when Tom Muldoon drilled home from the edge of the area with four minutes to go.

But, Tomczak quickly restored the two-goal cushion to put the result beyond doubt.

On Saturday, Saints crashed out of the FA Cup when going down 7-1 at North West Counties League side Norton United.

Tomczak got a late consolation for Saints, who make the short journey to Racing Club Warwick tomorrow before hosting Littleton on Bank Holiday Monday (3pm)
