Ghattaura proves too hot for Harborne

Khalsa’s Midland Premier game at home to Harborne was one of the few to escape the big freeze and the hosts will be glad it did after extending their lead at the top to 16 points.

However, they were made to work hard for their 15th successive win, with Gurminder Ghattaura’s late goal eventually seeing off the spirited visitors.

Khalsa started well but it was their visitors who won the first short corner of the game, which was well defended by Scott Angliss. Nick Mills then had to be at his best in the home goal as Harborne were awarded more short-corner opportunities.

It was Khalsa who drew first blood, though, with Jas Singh’s well-weighted aerial slotted home by Ghattaura.

The in-form striker was again on the mark to double Khalsa’s advantage after a Scott Cordon cross.

Harborne came flying out of the blocks for the second period and deservedly pulled a goal back when a smart deflection beat Mills.

A well-worked short corner routine then made it 2-2, but Khalsa stuck to their passing principles and Aaron Nagra restored their lead with a fierce shot 15 minutes from time.

An uncharacteristic defensive error left Mills exposed and allowed Harborne to pull it back to 3-3.

However, in the dying minutes, a precision pass from Jas Singh found Ghattaura at the top of the circle and the striker drilled home a shot to complete his hat-trick and claim all three points for the hosts.

Khalsa 3rds scored four second-half goals without reply to beat visitors Bloxwich.

The match was tied at 1-1 at the interval after Kulbinder Singh Birdi’s strike had been cancelled out by Bloxwich.
