Greene tipped for great things after Newbold success

History was made at Newbold Comyn Golf Club when 13-year-old Luke Greene became the youngest-ever winner of the Club Championship.

Played over the weekend of August 17 and 18, Greene carded gross scores of 73 and 83 to win by seven shots from Mark Newman.

Michael Hancox was third on 165, with Rob Brown taking the nett prize with a total of 142.

Greene’s coach Andy Hicks presented the trophy and tipped his charge for a great future, saying he was “the best youngster he has ever seen”.

Kenilworth Golf Club’s Chanon James won the Midlands final of the eight and under England Union Golf Skills Challenge to book a place in the England final at Woodhall Spa on Spetember 28.

James’ form has also got the eight-year-old a call-up for the Warwickshire County under-14 side.

Vice-captain Ron Guest and wife Angela, won the annual Drive and Dine Seniors Mixed Open at Kenilworth Golf Club.

They made good use of local knowledge to amass a splendid 41 points which secured victory by two points.

Fifty pairs from 23 clubs entered the competition with Michael and Glenyse Graham (Kirby Muxloe GC) finishing runners-up by virtue of a better back nine than Robert Blomfield and Helene Wain (Northamptonshire GC) plus Alan and Gillian Smith (Redditch GC) after all three pairs carded 39 points.

Dave and Kathy Cowell (The Vale GC) finished fifth with 38 points, while David and Ann Platt (Kirby Muxloe) took the best front nine prize and Richard and Sonia Spedding (Kirby Muxloe) claimed the best back nine prize.

Nearest the pin winners were David Ellis (Kenilworth, Mick Graham (Kirby Muxloe) and Ron Guest (Kenilworth).

Meanwhile, 60 ladies competed in the President’s Cup which was kindly hosted by Bryan Thomas.

The winners were Cath Hoare and Ann Gilmore who scored 44 points to finish well clear of the field.

Ann Peake and Christine Price finished runners-up by edging out Jane Adams and Beryl Jones on countback after both pairs scored 40 points.

Lynda McCarthy and Ann Saywell finished fourth on 39 points, while the best front nine prize went to Brigid Carrington and Sheila Mason with Carol Simmons and Judy Langford carding the best back nine.

A quartet from Leamington & County won the Society of 1908 Golf Club’s annual competition at Worlebury GC, Weston-super-Mare, with George Haynes, Jim Laidler, Graham Standbridge and David Halsall lifting the Silver Salver.
