Warwickshire Matchplay success but Pett is still coming up short

The Warwickshire’s Louie Pett claimed his first major trophy with victory over Joe Harris (Welcombe Hotel & Golf Course) in the Warwickshire Matchplay Championship at Shirley Golf Club.

Pett wrapped up victory on the 30th hole of the 36-hole encounter and Harris admitted it was his rivals’ consistency which proved the decisive factor.

“He was so straight it was ridiculous,” said Harris of the former Myton School pupil.

“He was just like a robot - he hit almost every fairway and green - he was quite hard to beat - he was the better player on the day.”

Pett, 19, knows there a lot of hard work still to come if he is to fulfil his ambition of stepping up to the pro tour but he is certainly putting in the hours to improve his game.

“I am playing golf full-time but over the winter I worked five days a week in Sainsbury’s to save some money,” he said.

“But I still managed to get as much golf and practice in as I could over the winter.”

Pett has identified a lack of length off the tee as a major flaw in his game but under the guidance of Warwickshire and England coach Andy Dunbar and a posture specialist, he is working on harnessing his height to achieve extra yardage.

‘I’m not long off the tee - a bit short actually - but this winter I started work with Luke Perrin, the Warwickshire posture performance guy, Andy of course, and I went on all the county squad training, which was great. I’ve noticed the difference.

“Next winter I’ll be doing conditioning work with Luke and if I can get my handicap down, playing lots of national events.’

Pett beat Coventry’s Nick Jenkins 3&1 before overcoming Atherstone’s Clayton Turvey 2&1 to reach the final and was in full agreement with Harris’ assessment of his game’s merits.

“I just played solid,” said Pett. “Nothing goes terribly wrong with my game - its all about consistency.”
