Gould finds course to his liking as C&AC duo net Masters medals

Phil Gould completed his 15th cross-country race of the year on Saturday when he turned out for Kenilworth Runners in the British Masters Cross Country Championships at Ruthin in North Wales.

Described by Gould as “cross country at it best”, the 8k course was on the side of a gentle hill on mainly pastureland.

The course design was excellent with a nice balance of climbs and descents which were evenly spaced and the occasional period of level ground.

Gould finished 15th overall and seventh M35 in 30:40.

There was medal success, however, for Leamington C&AC, with Susie Tawney claiming a silver and June Johnsona bronze.

The women’s and over-65 men’s races were simultaneously run over 6k, with Tawney involved in a three-way battle for silver in the W55 category.

The C&AC runner managed to put a few metres between herself and her rivals to finish in 27:03, with third and fourth separated by just a second.

June Johnson finished 81st woman and third W70 after clocking 37:09, with husband Andrew fourth M70 in 29:21.

The men’s race was won by Morpeth Harriers’ Ady Whitwam in 28:58, with Telford AC’s Claire Martin (22:52) the first woman.
