Gould is second in his category as track inexperience shows

Kenilworth Runners’ men’s team captain Phil Gould represented the club at the British Masters Athletics Federation 10,000m Championships and came home with a highly creditable second position in the V35 category.

Showing his relative inexperience on the track, Gould set off with a time in mind and allowed himself to play the role of rabbit to more seasoned track runners, who took shelter for the opening 3k on what was a warm and windy summer’s day in Oxford.

V35 winner Justin Thomas (Cornwall AC) took the lead around nine laps into the 25- lap race and pulled well clear, clocking 33:30 to second-placed Gould’s 34:18:41.

The race incorporated an open invitational which was won by James Bolton in 32:18.

Kenilworth Runners’ Matt Dyer finished 11th in the third race of the Leicester City Summer 5k Series, clocking 19:27 for the two-lap circuit of the city’s Victoria Park.

The race was won by Ian Mansell of Desford Striders in 17:01.

Two members of Kenilworth Runners travelled to Northamptonshire to take part in the Wellingborough 5 - incorporating the Eastern Veterans AC 5 Mile Championships.

Dave Pettifer clocked 34:22 for 87th position and third V60 in a race won by Coventry Godiva Harriers’ Scott Hazell (26:31).

Pettifer’s clubmate Rachael Siggers suffered somewhat in the heat to finish in 40:36 for 179th position.

The ladies’ race was won by Ellen Leggate (Cambridge and Coleridge AC).

Kenilworth Runners’ John Hosie and Andrew Holbrook took part in the The National Lottery Anniversary Run in London, clocking 30:31 and 30:51, to finish 120th and 142nd, respectively.

Both were pleased to claim the scalp of marathon world record holder Paula Radcliffe, who finished in 32:27.

The men’s race was won by Alex Cornwell of Woodford Green & Essex Ladies AC in 25:40; Josephine Stone of Middlesbrough AC (Mandale) was first lady home in 28:14.

Meanwhile, at Edmonscote track, 13 Leamington C&AC members and four guests lined up for the club’s 10,000m championship where conditions were so humid that a water-feeding station was available down the back straight.

Callum Hanlon, 18, romped to victory in 36min 4sec, while second-placed Sue Harrison’s time of 38:12 put her top of the Power of Ten V40 rankings for 2013.
