However, despite being out in force, the Green Army had to settle for an individual third and the male team prize as Leamington C&AC claimed a fine one-two through Richard Harper and Andrew Savery.

Entrants awoke to cold and cloudy conditions, which would have been near ideal were it not for the breeze that blew into runners’ faces for much of the point-to-point route.

Feeling strong, McCarthy led the race from 7k through to just inside the final kilometre.

Opting not to attack on the Rouncil Lane hill, McCarthy left himself vulnerable to the Leamington duo, who duly kicked past him on the final ramp up to Kenilworth Castle.

Loughborough-based Harper pulled away to win in 33:11, with Savery coming home in 33:17 and McCarthy crossing the line just two seconds later and wondering what might have been had he employed different tactics.
