Hard work goes unrewarded

WARCL Premier Division 2nds Bablake Old Boys vs Rugby

A hard-working performance from Rugby went unrewarded on Saturday as they lost by five-wickets to a strong Bablake side.

On a hot day, Rugby chose to bat first but the top order failed to fire and only in-form Jack Coleman (36) really made a meaningful impression on the scorebook.

However, with the top seven back in the pavilion, a fine partnership developed between the returning Ed Pell (44 not out) and captain Neal McGrath (28).

Rugby were finally bowled out for 174 in the 47th over.

Bablake’s openers built a solid foundation in response, before Mo Sadiq (15-4-39-2) finally made the first breakthrough.

Gary Brooks (40) and John Lidster (46) continued the hosts’ good work, but McGrath (14-2-50-3) began to make inroads and keep his side’s hope alive.

Bablake eventually reached the winning line in the 51st over, benefitting from the additional three overs that Rugby had given them by not batting their full allocation.

Rugby 3rds vs Solihull Blossomfield 3rds

Rugby’s youthful third team suffered a disappointing 46-run defeat on Saturday, but there were plenty of positives for their inexperience side to take.

Blossomfield batted first but a good bowling display from Rugby reduced them to 166 all out, with three wickets Hem Mistry (4/23) and Sachin Sard (2/22) the pick of the attack.

Frustratingly, Rugby’s response never really got going, as captain Shozab Mohammed (21) and Mo Ali (15) were the only batsmen to reach double figures, leaving their side facing a heavy defeat.

However, a final wicket partnership between juniors Callum McKay and George Muston nearly saved Rugby, as the pair survived 15 overs before heartbreakingly losing the last wicket with two balls remaining, as Rugby were all out for 120.
