Northampton Saints 5

Men’s 1s beat Saints 7-5 to get closer to promotion. After scoring early in the first half through Luke Armstrong, Saints scored two to go into the lead after around ten minutes of a dip in Rugby’s performance, but once that was out the way Rugby pressed on and grabbed two more before half time one for Szymon Oszyjczyk.

The start of second half is where the hosts switched gears and started to take the game away from Saints, with goals from Szymon, Dominic Marcano, Richard Howard Major for second week running and Stuart Jones. Even with Saints scoring three, Rugby just about managed to hold on and grabbed the three points. Man of the Match went to Luke Armstrong.

Khalsa 4

REWHC Men’s 2nd XI 1

A tough bottom of the table game. Rugby were knocking the ball around the back with confidence but Khalsa went 1-0 up with a controversial goal which which seemed to knock the wind out of Rugby’s sails. The luck seemed to be on Khalsa’s side as they were awarded a penalty corner for a deliberate foul by Tom, who was shown a yellow, converted despite best efforts of Russell, Lee, Max, John and Danny Bell.

The team talk at half time was about how to turn the game around but as Rugby pushed higher up the pitch they were hit on the break. George showed why he was straight back into the side by scoring a lovely reverse stick into the bottom right hand corner with Liam, Andy and Kristian pulling Khalsa’s defence all over the pitch. Sam Moorhouse worked tirelessly with Daniel in the middle to break up Khalsa’s play but again Rugby conceded whilst pushing for goals.

Edgbaston 1

The men’s 3rd XI showed a huge amount of desire and slick two-touch hockey. At half time it was 5-0, with goals from Gaz Unett (2), Jacob Till, Paul Nicholson and Nick Foster. After a tough season, Rugby enjoyed themselves, and gave Edgbaston a thoroughly miserable afternoon, Stuart Morgan and Finn adding two more.

They did, however, gift Edgbaston a goal with a couple of minutes left. If the 3rds continue to play like that they might just stay up by the skin of their teeth. Man of the Match went to Finn, making his debut having been promoted from the 6s. He caused their defence a lot of problems and showed great composure for his goal.

Well done all, including Keith and Steve who again umpired expertly.

Birmingham Uni 7

REWHC Men’s 4th XI 1

Men’s 4s played well against Birmingham Uni but lost 7-1. Under pressure from the start, they conceded two early goals but had an equal amount of chances, most notably Dave Renard missing a one-on-one by slotting wide. Going into the second half 3-0 down, Rugby had plenty of chances which they missed.

Matt Rush pinged some cracking through balls throughout the match. Although the 4s did concede another four goals they met the target of scoring themselves, with Cooky gracefully allowing the opposition’s CB to finish in his own top corner. Man of the Match went to Connor for awesome keeping.

Burton 1

REWHC Men’s 5th XI 2

The first half ended with no change to the scoreline. Keith fell to an injury to start the second half but was able to score a penalty flick straight at the keeper. Some good pressure ensued to up the intensity of the game, ending with debutant Max rounding the keeper to deposit the ball into the goal, despite an attempted steal from Harry.

A period of poor play followed. A series of short corners ended with Tim jinxing the clean sheet to make the score 2-1. Man of the Match went to Adam for the second week running thanks to a great second half performance.

REWHC Men’s 6th XI 1

Leicester 3

Unfortunately Rugby lost, probably missing Max Murphy who was promoted to fifth team. Charlie won Man of the Match for a solid performance at the back. Sam Border scored Rugby’s goal as the team played some good hockey in a good finish to the season.

Loughborough Town 1

REWHC Men’s 7th XI 3

The 7ths travelled to second-placed Loughborough 6ths and came away with a 3-1 victory. Fine team play led to J Templar setting up Guy Smith for a simple tap-in to reward the 7ths with a well-deserved 1-0 half-time lead. Harry Kirkbride scored the second goal mid-way through the second half to give clear water.

The match was getting very competitive and Loughborough pulled a goal back, but immediately the 7ths responded with J Templar restoring the two- goal lead. A great effort by all and lots of notable performances particularly J Templar, Henry Berridge and Neil Chorley.

REWHC Ladies 1st XI 2

Lichfield 2nd XI 0

Ladies 1st won 2-0 against Lichfield 2nds. Nicki scored, to ensure the win which means the team are now just one point away from promotion.

Sutton 1

REWHC Ladies 3rd XI 0

Ladies 3s had a 1-0 win away at Sutton leaving scoring a goal until the last two minutes. Some good play throughout, but they were just unable to convert. The end of the second half saw better passing and moving and the goal came from three moves from Jacqui, Lauren and then Hannah Thompson scoring.

With the win Ladies 3s secured promotion, with four games still left to play. Man of the match was Bethany Duffin.
