Khalsa maintain grip on top spot

Khalsa maintained their slender lead at the top of the West Midlands Premier with a 4-0 home win over rock-bottom Chesterfield.

The hosts created the first clearcut chance, with Surrinder Saini’s snap-shot failing to beat the visitors keeper.

The overworked keeper had to be at his best from a series of short corners as Khalsa pressed and was then relieved to see another effort hit the woodwork.

Dharminder Singh walked the ball past the far post after a fine run and cross from Jas Singh before he made amends with the opening goal.

A shot was stopped illegally on the line and Dharminder stepped up to convert the resultant penalty stroke.

Chesterfield were reduced to ten for the remainder of the first half after a player was dismissed for a dangerous obstruction, allowing Khalsa to move Adie Betts up front to partner Dharminder.

Despite their attacking formation, the hosts had to wait until the second period to double their lead, with Dharminder again on target after a well-weighted pass from Davinder Singh.

Davinder was unfortunate not to get on the scoresheet when his shot struck the post and rebounded out with such force it initiated a Chesterfield counter attack. Keeper Keith Distin’s first involvement saw him concede a penalty stroke, but he recovered to make a good save from the penalty flick.

Khalsa responded with Dharminder completing his hat-trick after a sweeping move invlving Pummi Singh, Jonathan Dove and Chris Darling.

A tremendous reverse-stick effort from Dharminder then completed the scoring after an assist from Jay Nagra.

Khalsa 2nds produced another poor performance to go down 6-0 at Edgbaston. The Birmingham side scored three goals in each half, assisted by sloppy errors from the visiting defence.

Khalsa 3rds also had a bad day. losing 2-1 at West Bromwich.
