Mexican proves just too hot for Folkard

NaomI Folkard had no regrets after bowing out of the Olympic archery at Lord’s to Mexican Mariana Avitia.

The Leamington archer claimed a hard-earned 6-4 victory in the first elimination phase against Russia’s Kristina Timofeeva, but was out-shot by her 18-year-old opponent in the round of 32, going down 6-2.

Avitia, ranked tenth in the individual competition to her opponent’s 42nd, won the middle two sets and drew the first and last to bring an end to Folkard’s third Olympics following on from Great Britain’s team defeat to Russia last Sunday.

But while the Royal Leamington Spa Archery Society member was clearly deflated after shooting a four in the deciding end of the team event, she felt she had nothing to reproach herself for in the individuals, with Avitia reeling off a string of maximums.

“I shot really well and had good timing and control,” said Folkard.

“For me, the conditions were perfect. It was drizzly and a bit chilly but there was very little wind and it was ideal really.

“I had a few arrows just outside the ten and on another day I could have had that little bit of luck.

“But the Mexican shot really well and she deserved it.”

While Folkard enjoyed her time in the spotlight - she was even trending on Twitter for a short time - the 28-year-old says it is important to look at the wider picture, with the Olympics being just one event on a hectic schedule.

“The Olympics is not everything.

“I took a silver at the Europeans so there are positives to take out of the year.

“You’ve got to set yourself goals other than the Olympics. Otherwise you’d just be sitting in a darkened room.”

With her Olympic dream over, Folkard’s attentions are already turning to her next event, the World Archery Field Championships, which start in Val d’Isere, France, on August 14.

And history suggests the world number one field recurve archer could quickly get back on the medal trail.

“My chances are pretty good,” she added. “I’ve been to the championships three times before and medalled twice.”
