Success for Rugby & Northampton athletes at UK Championships in Birmingham

The UK Masters Athletics Championships were held in Birmingham on August 9-10. Over the two days in some very extreme weather conditions several athletes from Rugby & Northampton AC competed in various age groups against the best in the country for podium places.

Pride of place went to local athlete Debbie Murch (W55) who, in a very competitive age group and after considerable training and perseverance, claimed her first UK title and gold medal, winning the hammer with 36.15m. She followed this victory with silver in the shot with 9.45m and then claimed her second gold in the heavy weight throw with 10.52m.

Husband Kevin Murch (M55) produced a Championship Best Performance taking the gold in the Javelin with 52.09m. Sally Hine (W60) took gold in the sprint hurdles in 16.11s, silver in the long jump with 3.36m and bronze in the 300m Hurdles in 64.70s. John Evans (M75) took gold in the triple jump with 7.52m and was 4th in the long jump with 3.34m. John Moreland (M55) took gold in discus with 46.10m and silver in the shot 11.27m, hammer 40.90m and weight 14.13m.

Lesley Willis (W50) claimed bronze in 100m in 14.74s and 400m in 69.46s whilst finishing 4th in the long jump with 4.13m. Angela Copson (W65) claimed gold in 1500m in 5:40.45 and 5000m in 20:19.48. Dave Burrell (M50) took gold in hammer 51.53m and weight 18.13m with silver in shot 12.19m, discus 41.01m and javelin 42.64m.
