End of season successes

Rugby & District Badminton Association

The RDBA completed the league badminton season in April, with the resurgence of Trinity Badminton Club, based at Hinckley Leisure Centre, coming to the fore in the Men’s league division 1, winning all ten games. Closest to Trinity were Claybrooke Badminton Club’s men’s 1, who have dominated in previous years, with seven matches won, with St Philips men’s 1 finishing third after winning five.

In division 2, Congratulations go to Hunters Badminton Club’s 2nd team and Trinity’s 2nd team, who each played eight and won six. In third place were St Philips 3rd team who won four.

Division 3 was dominated by Hunters 4th team, who had an impressive first season in the league and comfortably won five of their eight matches, with two drawn. They were followed by Harris men’s and St Philips 4th team who each scored nine points from their matches.

Men’s division 3 was set up for the start of the 2014–15 season to give the ‘Non League’ players a chance to play games against other players. The division proved to be a great success with all the new players saying what a great time they had had playing in the league.

For the start of the 2015–16 season, it already looks like the RDBA have interest from another team, based in South Coventry, who are keen to place a men’s team into division 3.

Claybrooke Badminton Club are to be renamed as Lutterworth Badminton Club, as they are based in the Lutterworth Sports Centre.

The RDBA will be hosting a Badminton Tournament at Rugby School sports centre in February 2016 to resurrect the Britannic Assurance Trophy which has been missing from the calender for the last eight years, having been won in the 2007-08 season by Bishop Wulstan 1st team.

As in the past, this tournament will be handicapped, both before and on the day adjustments.

The RDBA are quite keen to hold social events too in this coming year. Are you a badminton player, are you keen to play against other players, at any level? Might you be interested in playing in a tournament?

Hunters Badminton

Hunters Badminton club drew a successful season to a close this week. In the Rugby & District Badminton league the men’s teams from Hunters had a good season. Hunters 1 finished fourth in Division 1, notching up some notable victories on the way whilst Hunters 2 earned promotion from Division 2 by coming joint top of the division.

Hunters 3 maintained the high standard of the club by coming fourth in the same division. This season saw the Rugby League revive division 3 and Hunters 4 came out clear winners despite some hard-fought matches.

In the Coventry League, newly-promoted Hunters were set to try and continue their good form from last season.

Despite the team captain being posted away for six weeks due to work commitments, they were able to maintain their form and ended up a creditable second in Division 4 and earned promotion to Division 3.

This success has encouraged the club to enter another team into the Coventry league for next season, who will start in Division 5.

The club has run a very successful summer season with over 20 players regularly attending. On July 14 Hunters held a tournament in which 14 pairs competed. After a round robin stage the winners of the groups, Matuesz Gielazyn & Rosemary Pugh, Tom Gallagher & Tom Marsh, Paul Garner & Dan Bunker along with the highest scoring runners up, David Pugh & David Watkin went through to the semi-finals. Again two strenuous games ensued with Mateusz & Rosemary and Paul & Dan securing the places in the final.

In the end, the advantage of playing in a mixed pair formation secured Mateusz & Rosemary the victory and they were duly presented with the trophies and prizes. Medals went to Jane Beet as the best overall lady (winner excluded) and Dan Watkin as best overall Junior. Members look forward to enjoying another exciting tournament in the new season. If you are a player of a reasonable standard (aged over 14) and are looking to join a club please get in touch via http://huntersbadmintonclub.ueuo.com.

The new season starts in September with match nights at Bilton School on a Tuesday and club nights at Ashlawn School on a Thursday from 7-9.30pm.
