Decided by a single shot
Karl Finch, Keith Wooding & Graham Ashby (Avenue Coventry) – 14
Liam Pearcey, Adrian Johnson & Craig Carter (Rugby) – 13
The remaining County Final started in the late afternoon sunshine and finished in very gloomy conditions but the fading light didn’t diminish a very tight encounter between Karl Finch, Keith Wooding and Graham Ashby (Avenue Coventry) and Liam Pearcey, Adrian Johnston and Craig Carter (Rugby) which saw 12 out of 18 ends decided by a single shot.
Avenue set the early pace, leading by one or two shots to reach seven ends with a 6-5 advantage. Rugby then hit a four to take the lead but by the thirteenth end it was again Avenue who led by a shot. Three singles saw Rugby ahead by two with two ends left and the visibility pretty poor. Avenue pulled level with a double to send the game into a last end decider. With one bowl left to come Carter was a shot down and after discussion with his team retreated into the dark with the helpful advice: “If it looks different that end play what you can see”, a bit of humour as you could hardly see the bowls down the other end. Carter send the final wood but couldn’t take shot to give Avenue Coventry a 14-13 victory.
