Early games against Leamington and LMRCA
Rugby Bowling Club played their first outdoor game of the 2015 season at Royal Leamington Spa last Saturday and despite sharing the rinks three-all, won by 30 shots. Welcoming back Darren ward,introducing father and son Keith and Ewan Mason, and newcomer Mick Gill, the first two ends counted 1 each and the game then started in earnest. Balcombe Trophy winners Calvin Wells, Matt Wells and Martin Murley combined with John Codling to comprehensively win 26-8, but it was rink 3 who saved the day after a calamitous start. Captain Bruce Truman skipped Dave Mobbs Tom Wells and Joe Brayson and were 7-28 down after 15 ends. Pulling their socks up they scored 13 clear shots over the last 6 ends and Rugby were home and dry. Adrian Johnston, Bill Yates, Eddy Smith and Dave Scobie won 26-10. Alan Apsey, Brian Thompson, Mick Gill and Barry lines lost by 4. Mick Lill Brian Carr Rick Hayes and Ewan mason went down by 3, Darren Ward, Roger Smith, Rob Fox and Keith Mason won 22-11. A good start by all to what promises to be an exciting season.
In their latest game, local rivals LMRCA visited RBC and proved a strong early season adversary, winning three rinks and drawing one. RBC won by 21 shots. On rink one Dave Mobbs’ drew 26 all with Alan Hockin’s rink. Middleton cup star Calvin Wells was beaten 13-25 by Dave Commons but club president Adrian Johnston won 27-18 against Rail captain Charley Wright. Alan Apsey’s rink scored 6 shots over the last 3 ends to lose by 1 shot to Mick Moore and England trialist Craig Carter with Keith Mason.
Young Tom Wells and Mick Gill won 20-12 against Mick Hill and partners. Martin Murley, Joe Brayson, Barry Jarman and George Sowerby were sweep winners 25-8 against Brian Bateman’s rink. Next week RBC travel to Lillington BC.
