RBA finals day round-up
Sunday, September 21 saw with the finals day at the Grange Bowls Club the culmination of the Rugby Bowling Association’s playing season. Finalists representing most of the town’s bowls clubs had fought their way though several qualifying rounds against tough opposition to compete for the following:-
Dick Avery Cup (Men’s Singles Competition) – a well contested match between two relative new comers to the bowls scene saw Rugby’s Nigel Carter beat Oakfield’s Andy Sturgess 21 shots to 14.
Ralph Robins Memorial Trophy (Men’s Super Singles) – despite a late fight back by Thornfield’s up coming bowler Keith Mason, the experience and accuracy of Oakfield’s Peter Winn saw him home by 21 shots to 14.
Tony Dean Memorial Trophy (Mixed Pairs) – the LMRCA pairing of Wendy Baxter and Dave Commons established an early lead against Jean Dean and Howard Wilkins and with regularly telling scores went on to win by 25 points to 9.
Coronation Cup (Men’s Pairs) – this proved to be, as anticipated, a fine display of top-level bowling involving representatives of Rugby’s top young bowlers. In the end Rugby Club’s Adrian Johnson and Tom Millership came out on top against Liam Pearcey and Craig Carter also from Rugby Club by 22 shots to 16.
Presentations were also made to Rugby Club for winning the Friendship Cup with Thornfield as runners up and to Dave Commons, Mick Howkins and David Wright (LMRCA) for winning the Len Taylor Triples with Terry Fuller, Mick Moore and Mick Hill (also LMRCA) as runners up.
To complete the RBA competition programme picture for 2014 awards had previously been made to Oakfield for winning the Finch Cup with LMRCA as runner-up.
Congratulations and thanks were extended to all who had taken part in the competitions and supported the RBA during the year.
