The County Pairs Final was always going to be a good match with Welford represented by Wendy Holloway and Moira Parsons on the one hand and Rugby Thornfield represented by Jamie-Lea Winch and Maureen Edwards on the other - and their supporters were not disappointed.

Level pegging, 5 all at 6 ends, it was Maureen’s team which then took the lead only to be pulled back to 10 all on the 11th end, but 4 shots on the 12th followed by 2 on the 13th made them look invincible at 10-16.

However, Wendy and Moira were having none of it and 9 shots over the next three ends put them in front at 19-16 on the 16th end. Jamie-Lea and Maureen then dug their heels in and pulled ahead again ensuring an exciting finish and eventually winning 24-20.

Situated in the River Thames, between the bridges of Reading and Caversham, De Montfort Island is the unique home of The Island Bohemian Bowls Club which hosted Warwickshire’s friendly match against Berkshire.

As a bowler the opportunities to visit some really interesting places in this country are vast and the County Ladies’ trip by coach and ferry to this very special venue was just such an event even though it was the home team which won the day 92-132.

Highest winning rink went to Maureen Edwards with Christine Harding, Pat Lowe and Sigrid Thomas (all Rugby Thornfield) who were fairly evenly matched against their opponents and just ahead at 7-5 on the 10th end, but then they showed their determination and pulled ahead to win 20-13.

Maureen Tims (Whitnash) with Pat Harvey (Lillington), Liz Westell (Welford) and Jean Petty (Norgren) just kept going eventually winning 19-17.

The remaining teams weren’t able to keep their opponents at bay but everyone enjoyed the day which finished with an excellent tea and lots of camaraderie between the two counties before the return ferry trip.
