Extra-end defeat in Commonwealth Games final
Thornfield bowler Jamie-Lea Winch has added a silver medal to her triples bronze from Delhi four years ago. Leading in the women’s pairs, Jamie-Lea and skip Natalie Melmore were leading 16-11 but their South African opponents fought back and a score of 17-17 after 18 ends, meant the medals had to be decided on an extra end.
The England duo were playing well, but just couldn’t do enough to win the gold and the game ended in disappointment, 20-17.
Jamie-Lea, 23 who started playing at Bilton when she was ten, is now in her third season at Thornield.
Northern Ireland beat Jersey in the bronze-medal play-off.
