Rugby Thornfield Indoor Bowls Club held their final charity gala of the 2014/5 season. A full compliment of 16 teams took to the carpet to raise funds for the Warwickshire & Northamptonshire Air Ambulance.
Bowls Daventry, an organisation made up of the various bowls groups in Daventry (indoor, outdoor, shortmat and disabled bowls) brought three teams of their own and some additional items to be auctioned.
A perfect game saw Fly by Night take the early lead, a point clear of Speckled Hen and Whatever in joint second. In joint fourth were Terrible 4, Dambusters and Vikings. Heading into the half-time break Fly by Night again registered a perfect game. Whatever were in second place with The Canaries and Past & Present joint third, Noname completed the top five.
Fully refreshed Fly by Night dropped their first points of the evening but still held a one-point lead over second place Whatever, who in turn were a point clear of Past & Present. Joint fourth was held by The Canaries and Daffy Ducks. Fly by Night (Julia Scott, Sandy Boulton, Roy Scott and Ron Boulton) registered their third clean sweep to finish four points clear of Past & Present in second place. Whatever somehow ended in the top three despite not scoring a single point in their last game, joint fourth were Noname, Middle Newbold and The Canaries. Special mention goes to last place Volunteers (Barry and Judy Gardner, Gordon Chamberlain and Barry Sheasby), as the name suggests the team consisted largely of air ambulance volunteers.
Bowls Daventry are currently auctioning a Bowls England shirt from the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, signed by the team. Also the EBA (English Bowls Association) International Blue Blazer awarded to Stuart Thomas in 2000. All money raised will be going to the air ambulance, both had early bids of £100. To place a bid please email email@example.com with your details and the amount you wish to bid. Bowls Daventry is an organisation made up of the various bowls groups within Daventry to promote bowls within Daventry and hopefully reverse the trend of falling numbers of participants.
There will be a beach themed disco at Thornfield on Friday, July 3 from 7.30-11.30pm in aid of the air ambulance. Tickets £5 adults, £2.50 under 16s. Contact Mandy on 07727 839419.
