Busy week for golfing ladies

The ladies have had a busy week at Rugby Golf Club.

On Monday, September 3, they held their Grannies Shield competition with 16 entries.

It was played as a Stableford competition and was won by Nancy Taylor for the second year in succession with an excellent score of 40 points.

On the same day our five lowest handicap ladies travelled to Copt Heath Golf Club to compete against more than 20 other teams in the Warwickshire Ladies County Golf Association’s Team Championships.

The five individual scores are added together to play for a gross and net prize.

The Rugby team, Judith Pegler, Sue Jones, Deb Harrad, Charlotte Taylor and Abi Mortimer-Lane, came 2nd to the team from Moor Hall Golf Club in both the net and gross competitions scoring a total of 421 gross and 388 net. An admirable achievement.

n The Ladies Autumn Am-Am took place in sunshine on Wednesday. Seventeen teams took part in the Stableford competition and the winners were Joan Kearney, Jenny Cook, Bev Bates and Emma Maybury from Whitefields with a total of 82 points. A team from Rugby came 2nd with visiting teams in 3rd and 4th places.

The Ladies Scratch team played their final match of the season on Sunday against a team from The Worcestershire Golf Club.

The result was a fine win for the Rugby Ladies in this away match 3½ : 1½.

n Monday was the ladies friendly match at Henley-in-Arden. The opposition were only able to field three pairs and all games went to the 18th hole. The result was a win for the home team from Henley-in-Arden 2:1.

n Last Tuesday the Gents played an Extra Medal Competition through the day. It proved to be a very good day for Mick Hamp coming in with a net 62. Tim Watts who was leading in the clubhouse early in the morning with a net 63 came 2nd , 3rd was Paul Cluett with a very respectable net 64.

Rugby’s Mixed team were guests of Scraptoft Golf Club last Sunday. The format was fourball betterball and there were seven pairs competing in each team. Rugby lost a closely contested match 4 ½ to 2 ½.

September Over 55s Bogey: 1 Roger Crutchley 4up, 2 Anthony Boucher 3up, 3 Mike Scrimshire 2up. Jamie Lawrence memorial: 1 Vincent Walsh 44points, 2 David Jones 40, 3 Jonathan Campbell 36.

August Monthly medal: 1 Gareth Lewis 89-23=66’ 2 William Bell 78-10=68; 3 Sash Patel 96-28=68. Summer Alliance week 18: 1 Colin McErlean 33 points; 2 Phil Poole 32; 3 Eric Lloyd 29.

Week 19: 1 Dave Jones 41, 2 Ken Childs 40, 3 Gavin Hancock 38.
