It’s early in the race season for triathlon but already Rugby Triathlon Club members are proving their ability by qualifying to represent Great Britain this year.
Lucy Cash will be representing Great Britain at the Extremedura ITU Cross Triathlon World Championships on April 30.
This event is held in Spain and Lucy will be representing GB in the 35 to 39 age group category. The course includes 1000m swim, 20k bike and a 6k run.
n On March 5 a select group of Rugby Triathlon Club athletes took part in the Clumber Park Duathlon. This Duathlon involves a 10k run, 40k cycle and a final 5k run in the picturesque setting of the National Trust Park near Worksop. Julie Davies, Mike Smallwood and Stuart Hopkins all took part.
New member to the club, Stuart Hopkins achieved a time of 2 hours 3 minutes 27 seconds and qualified to represent GB in age group 35 to 39 at the Age Group European Duathlon Championships in Ireland on April 17. Mike Smallwood, a Rugby Tri Club member who is no stranger to representing Great Britain has again achieved a great result, this time at his very first duathlon event.
Mike was 3rd in his age group 60 to 65 with a time of 2 hours 24 minutes 51 seconds.
n Last weekend saw four club members compete in the Dambuster Duathlon held at Rutland Water.
This race included a 10k run around the lake and across the dam, a 42k cycle and finally a 5k run.
Stuart Hopkins again achieved a great time of 2 hours 5 minutes.
Club captain Keith Edwards took part here in his very first Duathlon and was 4th in his age group with a time of 2 hours 7 minutes 17 seconds.
This means Keith qualifies for the World and European Championships.
Keith has also been picked for the 45-49 GB squad for the European Long Course Triathlon Championships in Finland in August.
Club member Phil Gatley also raced and his time was 2 hours 24 minutes 11 seconds, and Chris Woods achieved 2-22.53.
n And best friend of the club, but now racing for MI racing, Sam Anderson 2-27.22 returning quickly to racing having just recovered from having her tonsils out.
n Rugby Triathlon Club welcome new members.
