On Sunday young Rugby boxer Connor Hannafin blitzed his way to become The National ABA Schoolboy Boxing Champion in the 46kg division.

With a large travelling support of friends and family roaring him on, he kept his nerve and kept up his guard to take the title at Everton Park Sports Centre. Avon Valley School pupil Connor, who boxes for King’s Heath Amateur Boxing Club in Northampton, beat Kelson Mitchell-Furgood of the Hornchurch ABC from London on a judges majority decision.

In a very close fight against a formidable Southern Counties Champion, Connor kept a tight defence and fired off rapid 3-4 punch combinations to head and body.

In the second round Connor landed some solid blows which blooded his oponents nose and caused him to stagger. In a high quality contest the 3rd and final round was very close but Connor’s educated boxing saw him finish strongly and take the decision and bring the title home.

Connor said afterwards that he was nervous going into the final but enjoyed the contest which was hard work.

Connor’s next series of fights will be in the Tri-Nations Championship where as Champion of England he will fight the Champions of Scotland and Wales to determine the Tri- Nations Champion.

Connor’s new sponsors, Stonewall Security Ltd, are really pleased with Connor’s achievement and are now looking forward to supporting him in his quest for further titles. He is also sponsored by Let’s Get Hire budget car and van rental from Woodside Park, Rugby.
