Rugby & Northampton AC
Warwickshire County Cross Country Championships
A large Rugby and Northampton AC team took part in the county championships held over 11km of testing, undulating park land in Cofton Park, Birmingham. The standard was, as ever, extremely high but the athletes acquitted themselves extremely well. The first Rugby athlete across the line was Paul Birch who finished 14th in the race – 4th Master (over 35) in a time of 38 mins 12 secs, a truly outstanding performance.
The next finisher was Stephen Marks in 39-43 for 27th in the race – 11th Master. Stephen was closely followed by Ian Botheroyd and Dean Oldfield. These four made up the four scorers in the Masters team which finished in silver position, the first medal in the senior race for several years.
The first ‘senior’ across the line for Rugby and Northampton was Alistair McDonnel, who produced a massive improvement to finish in 40th position in a time of 41-20.
Other finshers were Paul Shotton 63, Mike Andrews 77, Daniel Williams 79, John Taylor 98, Colin Durant 117, Laurence Scott 122 and Steve Childs 131. There were 175 finishers.
Cross country attention now switches to the third Birmingham League race which will be held at Coundon Park, Coventry today Saturday (January 10).
