Commanding start, but experienced opponent fights back

On his television debut, Rugby Superleague player Carl Green impressed commentators with his coolness and composure as he went into a commanding 3-1 lead in his preliminary round of the Coral UK Open in Minehead.

But fellow Riley’s qualifier Lionel Sams, a veteran of seven previous UK Opens, came back to win 5-3 in the end.

Green, whose supporters were shown cheering him on in the live ITV4 coverage, made a fantastic start to the match on the main stage at Butlin’s and was well on top in the early stages, showing little sign of nerves.

Sams came back to 2-1 but helped by a 180 in the next leg Green went into the break leading by 3 legs to 1.

But within minutes, Sams, gained in form and levelled the match at 3-3. Feeling the pressure in this first to five-legs opener, Green narrowly lost the next two legs and Sams went through to the first round.
