Rugby Superleague player making television debut
Darts player Carl Green makes his television debut today (Friday) in the Coral UK Open.
In the very first match of the tournament at Butlin’s Minehead Resort, the Rugby Superleague team player takes on fellow amateur qualifier Lionel Sams in the preliminary round on the main stage at 11.45am. It will be shown live on ITV4.
Carl, 48, will be very much the underdog as Sams is making a comeback, having previously played in seven UK Opens when he was on the PDC circuit. But he is looking forward to it.
Qualifying competitions were held at 32 Riley’s centres around the country and Carl actually beat his son Dan to win the Coventry event last month. Dan, 19, is also a talented player, who has just started on the PDC Youth Tour.
“I’ve never played in front of TV cameras before,” said Carl, who represents the Prince of Wales in the Brandon, Wolston & District Darts League and also plays for Warwickshire B.
“I will be nervous, but I’m looking forward to it and want to make the most of it.
“I’ve not played at this sort of level before and I just want to perform well and give him a game.
“I had a good day in the competition at Coventry, where there were 64 of us. I was relaxed in the final against Dan because I didn’t mind which of us won it and went through.”
Carl began playing darts 30 years ago at the Lawford Arms in Long Lawford and has since won many titles at local level.
He added: “Playing in the UK Open is going to be hard, but I have no expectations. It’s just great to have qualified and I want to do as well as I can.”
