A GOLF day in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support has raised a fantastic £3,450 for the charity.

Keen golfer Garry Lane wanted to do something in memory of his mother Annette, who died from pancreatic cancer in 2009 aged 44, to show how much his family appreciated the help of Macmillan nurses.

And along with friends Paul Martin, Adrian Evans and Camillus McCarron, organised the event at Rugby Golf Club last Friday.

The tournament at the Clifton Road course attracted 76 entries, with 94 people enjoying a meal there in the evening.

The inaugural Annette Lane Memorial trophy was won by Steve Diston and it will now become an annual competition.

Garry said: “I’m very grateful to everyone who supported the day and helped to raise such a wonderful sum of money.

“I’d also like to thank Yvonne James and Leah Doupe for their help.”

Annette was an assistant teacher at Hillmorton Primary School and although her initial diagnosis was just sixth months, she fought on for 18 months.

Garry added: “I just wanted to give something back to Macmillan. My mum was in and out of hospital and as well as giving her so much help, they made life much easier for my brother Tom and I, as we were looking after her.”

Rugby Golf Club’s Bank Holiday Mixed Competition in which all entrants drew for partners, produced 16 willing pairs who played through a steady drizzle, but some good scores were still recorded.

There were several newcomers to the mixed scene this week and they came up with some success.

The winners with 43 points were Adi Stock & Krys Lewandowski who were recording their first ever win. Second with 41 points were Duncan Snook & Veronica Smith and third were Graham Allen & Linda Ollivant with 40 points.

The prize for the Best Par 3 total score was won by Gordon Coulthard & Julie Broom with 18 points.

n There are still two team of four vacancies at 11.10 and 11.20 for the Mixed Alliance on Monday, June 6 and should anyone want them they should contact the club secretary on (01788) 542306.

n The Mid Warwickshire League saw Rugby playing Coventry away last week, with only Chris Abbott securing a win for Rugby, and two halves from Brian McGovern and Jeff Dunning, the final score line was 4-2 to Coventry.

n The Ladies last week played the Ping four ball better ball qualifying round which was won by Judith Pegler and Claire Scott with a score of 42 points and in second place was Sandra Brazier and Sue Graham with 39 points.
