Majek wins Seniors Open

The Seniors’ Open was held at Rugby Golf Club on Thursday, July 31 with 111 players taking part.

Having had such a superb summer for golf, it was disappointing that play was delayed for over an hour in the early afternoon due to thundery weather which was great for the course but not so good for the competitors playing at the time.

The event is run for gentlemen, being local Rugby members and members from other golf clubs, who play in three age categories.

In the 55 to 66 age group Richard Majek from Rugby won with a tremendous 46 pts with Richard Sands from Rugby second with 42 pts and Nigel Lunt, also from Rugby, third with 42 pts.

In the 67 to 71 age group the winner was Frank Lewin from Rugby with 42 pts, second was Michael Morris from Rugby with 39 pts and third was Steve Hibberd from Rugby with 39 pts.

The 72 and over age group winner was Lawrie Gillon with 44 pts from Rugby, second was Fred Haycock from Rugby with 42 pts and third was Mr G Wright, a visitor from Kingsthorpe Golf Club, with 39 pts.

Richard Majek from Rugby Golf Club was therefore the overall Rugby Golf Club Seniors Open Champion for 2014 and is pictured together with Rugby Golf Club’s Captain, Duncan Snook.

The nearest the pin winners on par 3’s were G Bollands (Middlesborough), R Smith (Silverstone) and Keith Oag (Rugby) and nearest the pin in 2 on par 4’s were J Madden from Copsewood Grange for the visitors’ prize and Dave Clark for the Rugby members’ prize.
