Cleaton wins through to Faldo Series final in America
The 2014 Warwickshire U14s and U12s County Championships, held at North Warwickshire Golf Club last month, resulted in two stunning wins for Rugby Golf Club’s talented juniors.
In the U14 championship Rugby’s Aidan March, handicap 11 but playing to scratch format, had a very tidy outward nine of 37 (par 36) but went back to level when he birdied North Warwickshire’s very tough 400yd -10th hole. Aidan finished his round with 75 gross to take the title.
In the U12s, Kirtus Grimmett returned an impressive 84 to give him the trophy – another cup to take back to Rugby.
Warwickshire Union of Golf Club’s David Morgan said: “If the results of this year’s championships for our youngest golfers are anything to go by, Rugby Golf Club has been developing the next wave of junior talent in our county. The U14s trophy has been won by just about every talented golfer who has gone on to greater things!”
Just two days later at Hollinwell Golf Club in Nottinghamshire, Rugby’s Tom Cleaton won the U16 age category of the Faldo Series England Midlands Championship.
On this very demanding golf course over three rounds Tom scored a gross 223 (71-75-77) narrowly defeating his nearest rival Alex Fitzpatrick (Hallamshire) who made a late challenge to finish on 224.
The Faldo Series Championship gives opportunity to young people, boys and girls aged 12 to 21. Fields are divided into five age categories, three boys and two girls from each of 40 annual tournaments taking place in 30 countries worldwide, spanning Europe, the Middle East, North and South America and Asia.
Tom is now off to the Faldo Series Grand Final at The Greenbrier in West Virginia, USA next month.
With Rugby Golf Club’s determination to encourage more young people to take up the game of golf the performance of their present juniors demonstrates the Club’s commitment to this initiative. Any budding Rory McIlroy’s out there waiting to be inspired…just get in touch.
