Canklow Woods, near Sheffield, was the venue for the South Yorkshire event where several OD members clocked up some good results. Will Gardner M20 came 4th on the longest course, 7.4k with 265 metres of climb taking 53.12mins. Junior Harrison McCartney M16 on the same course took 56.36 to finish in 8th position. Mike Hampton was the top M65 taking 58.20 on the Blue 5.4k course with 190 metres of climb and Thelma Spelton was 3rd W65 on the Short Green 3.1k course in 57.07.

Wendover Woods in the Chilterns is always a great annual pre-Christmas event and juniors Daniel Walker M4 and Freddie Walker M8 were 5th and 6th respectively on the short White 1.9k course taking 27.48 minutes and 32.28. Will Heaton M14 was the top junior on the Light Green 3.7k course taking 58.38. On the Short Green 3.5k course Roger Hailey came 3rd overall and top M75, other top age positions on the same course were achieved by John Bowman M70 50.48, Janet Richardson W60 53.56, Hilary Simpson W70 57.42, Mel Elkington W50 58.23 and Jane Stew M55 1.06.59. Stephen Elkington M16 was top junior on the Green 4.7k course, taking 40.45, Margaret Willdig top W60 1.02.45 and Carolyn Marr top W65 1.13.30. On the Blue 6.4k course Dave Marr was top M60 runner taking 1.05.50 and John Ward top M65 1.18.43.

Coombe Abbey Country Park, near Coventry, was a very popular event organised by Hilary and Trevor Simpson with over 200 orienteers from all over Midlands enjoying a fine day and competing on courses planned by Sue Hallett. Harrison McCartney M16 came 1st on the longest course Blue 6.9k in 34.12, 2nd was Chris McCartney M40 36.19 and 3rd Tom Jeffries M40 41.08. On the Green 4.8k course Lesley Ross W45 was 2nd in 33.14 and Dave Marr M60 3rd in 33.41. Sheila Carey W65 was 2nd on the Short Green 3.3k course taking 29.18 and Liz Cross W40 3rd in 30.53.

Three club juniors took the top three positions on the Light Green 3.9k course, Stephen Elkington M16 24.00, Aimee Morse W16 28.46 and Ella-Rose McCartney W14 29.06. Sam Leadley M14 won the Orange 3.1k course in 24.14 just ahead of club mate Dan Hobbins M14 24.53. The three top juniors on the Yellow 2.4k course were Oliver Lunn M12 13.15, Felix Lunn M12 16.03 and Pippa Smart W10 17.17.


The next club event, the Christmas Relays, will be at Rough Close, Coventry, on Saturday, December 28, registration at 10am. On Wednesday, January 1 the New Year’s Day Trophy event, open to all, will be at Kingsbury Water Park, North Warwickshire, registration is from 11am and mass start is at 12 noon. Runners and walkers of all ages, 5 – 85 years and abilities will be welcome to come along to try out this outdoor adventure navigation sport.
