The East Midlands League race at Spring Cottage, near Ashby de la Zouch, organised by Leicestershire Orienteering Club, gave club members a chance to earn national ranking points at this level C event. On the longest course, on form Nathan Lawson M20 was 2nd in 63.25mins on the 9km course behind ex Droober, Will Critchley M21 58.09 over from Canada. Club Captain Alistair Powell M35 was 8th in 72.08 and David Lawson M50 9th in 76.46mins.
Felix Lunn M14 clocked up an amazing 2nd place on his first competitive Blue course. He ran the 6.6km course in 55.45mins; Harriet Lawson W21 was 4th in 58.49mins and Oliver Lunn M14 6th, also a Blue Course debut, in 61.27mins. Liz Phillips W50 was 10th in 46.01mins on the 4.5km Green Course. Other good junior runs were: Peter Markham M12 6th on the Orange 2.8km course in 36.08mins, Max Straube-Roth M10 4th 17.48mins and Tilly Flippance W10 7th 28mins on the White 1.4km course.
The steeply sided bluebell strewn wooded area at Cranham Woods, near Painswick, in Gloucestershire was very muddy and hence slippery. Harrison McCartney M18 was 7th on the longest Brown course 8.8km with 370 metres of climb and found the 27 controls in 78.33mins. Lesley Ross W50 was 3rd on the Green 4.5km course in 54.56mins. Roger Hailey M75 was 7th in 63.14mins and John Ward M70 10th in 64.55mins on the Short Green 3.7km course. Pippa Smart W14 was 7th on the Light Green 3.4km course in 80.58mins. Rob Smart M45 1st on the Orange in 27.21mins and Josie Smart W12 2nd on the Yellow 2.4km course in 26.12mins.
This Sunday the West Midlands League event will be held at Mansty Wood, Cannock Chase, and it is anticipated that many club members will be competing for the club in preparation for the British Orienteering Championships taking place in Shropshire at the end of April.
