World Orienteering Day, summer training camps and other results
The World Orienteering Day event at Abbey Fields and around Kenilworth Town was hugely popular with 145 entrants for the 5 park and urban courses. In the UK there were 137 events and from around the world there were 79 countries, 2589 registered events with participation level currently standing at 223,422 with 787 locations still to register. Organiser Rob Smart and Dave Chandler were very pleased to see so many schools, Beavers and Cubs taking part. Winners of the courses were Joanna Leadley W14 in 7.49mins on the Park Easy 1.5km course, Alicia Roberts W16 in 20.49mins on the Park Medium 3.4km course, Felix Lunn M14 in 22.19mins on the Park Long 4.6km course, Paul Quinney M45 in 33.21mins on the Urban Short 3.5km course and Chris McCartney M45 40.25mins on the Urban Long 5.8km course. Congratulations go to Oliver Flippance, Oliver Lunn and Felix Lunn all M14’s who have been selected to go to the week long national training camp at the end of July at Lagganlia, near Aviemore in Scotland. They earned their places by achieving championship standard in at least one of the major events during the past few months and were nominated by the West Midlands Junior Squad Orienteering Association. Congratulations also to Nathan Lawson M20 and Harrison McCartney M18 who have been invited, following successful results at major events, to the pre Junior World Championships training camp in August in Tampere, Finland.
Anne Straube W40 had a very successful East Sussex Triple Event Orienteering Weekend, coming 1st in the Women’s Open Sprint Race at Hampden Park in 13.59mins on the 2.4km course, she was also 4th in 46.44mins the Middle Distance 5.3km at Friston Forest and 3rd on the Green 4.2km course in the Long distance Race at Friston Forest in 33.29mins. Bruce Bryant M55 was 2nd and Roman Kotecky M55 3rd on the Blue Middle distance event and Max Straube Roth M10 was 1st on the White Middle Distance 1.3km course in 20.09mins.
There were 5 courses at the Whitchurch Urban Event and Harrison McCartney M18 was 3rd in 45.03mins and Chris McCartney M45 4th in 48.30mins on the longest 7.2km. Keith Willdig M65 was 4th and Peter Carey M70 5th on the 3.7km Course 3. Oliver Flippance M14 was 1st on the 2.1km Course 4.
On Saturday (May 22) at Ryton Pools Country Park the club are holding a beginners orienteering event from 11am until 3pm as part of Warwickshire Big Day Out. Entry is free, but a deposit is required for the hire of the timer. On Wednesday 25th May at Hartshill Hayes Country Park, the club is organising an event suitable for beginners and experienced orienteers with starts from 6pm until 7.30pm. Runners and walkers of all ages, 5 – 85 years, and abilities are welcome to come along to try out this outdoor adventure navigation sport. Help is available to all newcomers.
