OD JUNIOR HELPS GB WOMENS TEAM TO OVERALL 5TH AT JUNIOR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
Julie Emmerson W20 and Harrison McCartney M18 were both selected to represent Great Britain at this year’s Junior World Orienteering Championships, staged in Switzerland.
The best result was achieved at the final event where the British girls relay team finished in 5th place out of 46 teams entered. The podium place was achieved by a magnificent run by Julie Emmerson on the last leg bringing the team up from 7th at the hand over to finish in 5th place. This is a British record position for the women’s relay. Great Britain finished in 12th place overall, after results were compiled from the men’s and women’s Sprint, Long, Middle and Relay races, from 39 competing nations, Switzerland were 1st, Sweden 2nd and Finland 3rd.
The popular five days of international orienteering in France was held this year at Aveyron in the Midi-Pyrenees.
Congratulations to Hilary Simpson W75 who was on the podium having been placed 3rd overall with a 2nd, 4th, 1st, 4th and 5th places. This was equalled by her husband Trevor Simpson M75 whose 3rd overall place was gained by coming 6th, 5th, 3rd, 5th and 1st on each of the days. Nathan Lawson M20 was overall 7th place on his course achieving 15th, 8th, 16th, 5th and 8th places.
The three event Sprint Scotland held at Hallglen East, West and Grangemouth attracted several Octavian Droobers and Mike Hampton M70 came 2nd overall in the Mens Ultra Vet class.
On Wednesday, August 3 at Rough Close Scout Camp, near Coventry, the club is organising an event suitable for beginners and experienced orienteers with starts from 6pm until 7.30pm. Runners and walkers of all ages, 5–85 years, and abilities are welcome to come along to try out this outdoor adventure navigation sport. Help is available to all newcomers.
