Past captains return for match with Bob



The first major for the Junior Section of Rugby Golf Club, was the Ken Whitehead 3 Clubs and Putter competition. 

Thirteen players took advantage of the lovely conditions with some very good low scoring.  Junior Captain, Cameron Snook, who has been having a quiet season, won with a great score of 64 net. 

Dan Wood took second place on count back from Mark Jackson (third) and Ryan Kowal, all with net scores of 66. Oliver Jones was fifth with net 67. 

n Twelve-year-old Ollie Branston showed the older juniors the way home last Friday by winning the Stableford competition.

The fine weather continued and young Ollie, playing off a handicap of 32 handicap, returned a great score of 44 points, resulting in him having his handicap reduced by four shots.

Jack Moran also showed great form with 41 points by just pipping Alex Clewett on count back to snatch second place. Jack Malone, was fourth with 40 points.

n And 77 players competed in the Victory Cup last week. With 11 players returning net par or better, it was the low score of net 63 which won David Winkle the competition.

Second and third place were decided on a count back with Roland Slassor and Vincent Ogg both returning net 64 and finishing in that order.

Mark Wakelin’s recent good form continued with a net 65 along with John Amer who finished fourth and fifth respectively.

n The highlight of the week was the Captain versus the Past Captains of Rugby Golf Club.

This is always a popular event, and this year was no exception with 19 Past Captains attending the day and 18 playing in the 18 hole competition.

Current Club Captain Bob James’ side won the match 6-3 but a gentlemanly half was agreed before everyone settled down to an evening meal and many a story of years gone by.


There were 4 returns of 39 points in the Midvale Trophy, Graham Smith, Mark Hughes, Colin Odwell and Mark Giannasi were the players concerned, Graham Smith Winning the trophy with a superior back 9.

In the Gents Open Paul Millward, Ellis Roberts and Graham Smith all carded a 69, only to be outdone by John White who won the Open for the 2nd time with a creditable 68.

Derek Osbourn won the Yellow Tee Stableford with 38 points from Stuart Edge who also scored 38 losing it on the back 9.

The Barrie Thomas Senior Pairs Trophy was a success for Malcolm Couldwell and senior captain Ian McCord, their 39 points was too good for 2nd placed Phil Dobb and Laurie Jones who fell one short on 38.

The last of the Open Mixed Greensomes is on Monday, August 29 with a shotgun start at 1pm.
