Local MP Mark Pawsey needed his trainers when he joined the recently-formed Rugby Men’s Running Group at Rugby athletics track.
The first men’s running group started in April and is being coached through a 16-week programme to help men of all ages with little or no running experience to improve their fitness.
Around 20 men are regular attendees at the group’s twice-weekly sessions.
Group coach Lawrence Scott said: “There have been really successful beginners running groups for women in Rugby for several years, but there was no equivalent for men.
“So we set this one up also under the umbrella of Rugby & Northampton AC and it’s been a real success.
“Ten weeks ago many of these guys struggled to jog for a minute and today they’ll run 3.5k, without stopping. “
After an invigorating workout with the group Pawsey said: “Despite the rain it was a great pleasure to join the men’s running group for a 3.5km run.
“This is an opportunity for men of all abilities to get together and do exercise while having fun at the same time.
“I particularly appreciated the specialist warm-up beforehand and warm-down afterwards under the watchful eye of coach Lawrence Scott.
“I hope this will inspire others to join in.”
