Last weekend Rugby Polo Club held their second tournament of the five month outdoor season. Rugby welcomed four visiting teams from surrounding clubs - Offchurch, Southam, Ranksboro and Rutland – as well as fielding four “home teams”. With the weather holding off, play began at 10.45 on Saturday with the playoffs and teams fighting it out to reach the finals which were to be held the next day.
Sunday was somewhat blustery, giving many players a welcome excuse when missing the goal! However missing the goal was something that wasn’t on the mind of South African born Grant Collet who managed to pull out two huge goals from over half way to bring his Offchurch team home to win The Pytchley Trophy, a prestigious 2 goal tournament.
The Final of the Onley Plate saw two regular teams from Rugby fighting it out, with Charlie Bulmer leading the attack for the Butchers team. However that wasn’t enough against the onslaught from Bob Music, who were once again led by Grant Collet with Grant and Daudi Kahia shooting some spectacular goals to win an exciting final.
Rugby Polo Club’s next tournament will be held on the 4th and 5th June at the polo fields on Ashlawn Road. All are welcome and admission is free.
