Men’s Singles final 2011

For the fourth year running, the final of the Graeme Baker Trophy (Club Singles Championships) was between Marcus Powell and Chris Hinds and it was the best match between the two players yet!

In very favourable conditions for playing tennis, Chris took control of the early games as he raced into a 4-1 lead. He was playing a good mix of depth to push Marcus back and then anticipating very quickly punishing any loose returns. After a small outburst due to his frustration, Marcus started to calm himself down and began to concentrate on the task at hand. However, the gap proved too big as Chris deservedly won the first set by 6-3.

The second set showed a complete turn around as Marcus had all the momentum with him. In a very short time, he had levelled things up by taking the set 6-1. At this point, Chris was beginning to show some of the frustrations that dogged Marcus early in the match. I believe this was Chris’s eventual downfall!

The final set was a lot closer, but it was Marcus who managed to take a slender lead and was holding onto his mental skills the better while Chris was still simmering with his game. This mental edge enabled Marcus to focus on building points the better and choosing the right time to hit the winning shots. After two hours of exciting tennis Marcus closed the match out by 6-4 to claim his 3rd win in a row.

Many thanks to the other 16 players who took part in this event this year. Graeme Baker
