After agreeing to support the VW Apprentice scheme rally car, Stretton on Dunsmore driver Kevin Perks has won the championship for them.
The Skoda rally car is prepared in Milton Keynes by the VW apprentices from around the UK.
The top achievers go on to become part of the team, and travel around the country to support the car. This year they competed in a full season of events, taking part in the Heart of England Rally championship.
The reliability of the car proved to be the foundation of a good point scoring year. After a good first half season, the team were then invited to compete at the famous Goodwood festival of speed. Kevin competed against his life time hero Hannu Mikkola, former world rally champion. At that event Kevin managed to complete the stage in anew fastest time for the car.
With two events cancelled in the second half of the season, it looked like they would not be able to gain a top 10 slot.
Then fortunes changed, at the last event in South Wales, the car broke a driveshaft. It looked like it was all over, and the team packed up to return home. Then one car rolled over, others also failed to complete the stages. The team watched in anticipation as the results came in. Kevin Perks with Derek Kriedemann navigating, took 4th overall in the championship, but first in class. A delighted team are all turning up for the awards ceremony tomorrow (Friday) to claim their championship awards.
The VW group are so pleased with the results that the team are now preparing for a full national championship run in 2013. The BTRDA will be covered on TV, and an extra 30 minute slot for the 1400cc class that the team compete in. The next few weeks will see Pete Rugman the team marketing manager (also an apprentice) trying to secure sponsorship. The car is now on display with the previous trophies at the VW National learning centre in Milton Keynes.
