Ladies’ singles final

This weekend, Rugby LTC held the final of their Ladies Singles Championships.

Rebecca Thomas and Rachael Baker fought out the final for the honour of lifting the Pam Bond Trophy in 2011.

Rebecca got off to the better start in the match as Rachael struggled with the sheer power that Rebecca was generating, especially on the serves. However, Rachael hung on in and was never far behind.

What turned out to be the most crucial game of the match occurred while Rebecca was serving at 4-3.

There were numerous deuces, but it was Rebecca that finally sealed a 5-3 lead. She then went on to break Rachael’s serve to win the 1st set 6-3.

Rachael came out fighting to take the 1st game of the 2nd set. She was beginning to find some good neutralising depth on her returns and pressurise Rebecca. The remainder of the set was very close with nothing between the players.

They were both cracking in the serves and numerous booming forehand winners were flying from both of the player’s racquets.

At 5-4 up, Rebecca finally turned the screw, as Rachael appeared to lose a little belief in the task ahead of her. Rebecca finished the match off in style with another signatory booming forehand winner down the line.

Many thanks go to all the players who took part in this event and especially to Pam Bond for her generosity in sponsoring this event for another year.
