Talented young fencer Reuben Whiting is celebrating winning his first medal.

Reuben, who turned 11 this week, started fencing at the after-school club at Bilton School about two years ago.

When the Salle Ursa Club opened in Rugby last March, he joined that, and, last weekend took part in the Leon Paul Junior Series Sabre Competition held in Glastonbury.

This is a series of competitions held throughout the year for Junior Sabre fencers from all over the country and features the very best in the country.

This was only Reuben’s second ever competition and he did himself great credit by taking the bronze medal in the under 11 category, particularly as he came back in his quarter final to win 10 -9, after being 7-1 down!

His coach Viv Frith said: “I am particularly proud to be able to say that I have coached Reuben ever since he started fencing and what he has achieved has given me as much pleasure as winning my own medals.”

The club meets on Thursday evenings at Harris School, Mellish Road at 7.30 to 9.30pm and all equipment is provided for members, who are welcome to join.

Beginners courses start at the beginning of each month and more information is available on the website at:
