When it comes to providing a warm welcome at the 19th hole - Rugby Golf Club’s Yvonne James is the best there is.
The stewardess has just been named the London Pride English Golf Union Steward of the Year 2011 for the Midland region.
The competition, in its fifth year, is a joint initiative by the EGU and Fuller’s London Pride, rewarding outstanding service.
Members at the Clifton Road course ensured she received a huge number of votes, all hailing her dedication and ‘endless enthusiasm’ as something which Rugby couldn’t manage without.
The judges commented on the fantastic reception they received when they visited the club. “Yvonne was very welcoming and her knowledge of each and every member was outstanding. She has non-stop dedication to her job, the members and the club.
“Her friendly and bubbly personality provided a warm atmosphere for golfers and visitors, leaving everyone with a thoroughly enjoyable experience, and this is what impressed us the most.”
She received her award at a ceremony in London and was able to take six guests, all directors of the club.
Yvonne, who is organising a cheese and wine evening to say thank you to all the members, said: “All their comments were amazing. I love looking after everyone from all walks of life and they like to enjoy their food and drink in an enjoyable atmosphere.
“My job does involve unsociable hours but all the members have become my friends and it’s like having an extended family. There were 180 at my 50th party six weeks ago!
“I’ve never won anything before and want to say a massive thank you to everyone who voted. I couldn’t have done it without them. They are a pleasure to look after and I’m very proud to be part of Rugby Golf Club. I’m still smiling from ear to ear!”
Yvonne has worked there for five years, in two spells, being back for nearly three years this time. Her role includes running the clubhouse and bar, organising societies, parties and other functions.
