Hundreds of people filled Newbold’s Parkfield Road ground on Saturday for a special derby day with Old Laurentians - dedicated to their two clubmen who died earlier this month.
Players and spectators from both clubs united in a minute’s applause for Old Laurentians’ Dom Marsella and Newbold’s president Alan Bale.
The Midlands 1 East league game proved slightly closer than their November encounter at Fenley Field, with a 45-12 win for the hosts.
And there were home wins for the 2nd and 3rd XVs, with members of both families among the players.
Club chairman Paul Fereday said the contribution and commitment the Marsella and Bale families have given to Newbold RFC over the last five decades is unmeasurable.
“And I know it will continue for the next five - the roots are well and truly in place,” he said.
“I personally, the Newbold committee and all our members would like to thank the OLs for their unprecedented move of closing their club on Saturday, ensuring everybody stayed at Newbold and made it such a special day.”
