Youngsters meet boxer Dermot Gascoyne

Year 7 G&T PE Academy Day -

Thursday 19th May 2011 -

Ken Marriott Leisure Centre.

This was the third and final of the three Secondary G&T Academy Days to support Gifted and Talented students in PE and Sport from across Rugby, organised and hosted by the Eastern Warwickshire School Sport Partnership (EWSSP).

The day began with students taking part in three practical sessions in the morning, run by the School Sport Coordinators (SSCo’s). Year 7 G&T PE identified students first had the opportunity to try out Street Surfing, a new sport which is sweeping the nation, as well as participating in some fitness activities to improve their Speed, Agility and Quickness (SAQ). They then went on to work in mixed school teams in a range of activities, the aim was for them to develop their skills, knowledge and understanding of Team Challenge activities (problem solving and team work activities).

Finally the students were introduced to our inspirational guest speaker Dermot Gascoyne, former International Heavyweight Boxer. Students from all the Secondary Schools in Rugby worked with Dermot and the SSCo’s to develop their knowledge and skills. Dermot led a workshop getting the students to discuss and share ideas as well as plan solutions on How to ensure they stay Motivated in their Sport.

The G&T Academy Days are just one way in which the EWSSP supports young people in PE and Sport. The Partnership also organises and runs Sports Festivals for all Primary Schools to attend and compete in a range of Sports, it also provides opportunities for students to develop their leadership skills by running Young Leaders courses and supporting students on the Step into Sport Project.”
