Smallwood adds British crown to European and worlds

Mike Smallwood, current European and World Sprint Triathlon Champion, added the British Champion title to his list of wins this weekend.

Along with several Rugby Triathlon Club members, Mike competed in the British Sprint Triathlon Championships at Emberton Country Park, Buckinghamshire, on Sunday and won his age group (65-69) in a time of 1:11:48.

Fellow member Tony Johnson posted an excellent time of 1:17:04 placing him 5th in his age group (60-64) considering he’d competed in a half-ironman event the day before (The Beaver, Belvoir Castle). There he successfully won his age group at the longer distance of 1900m swim, 90k cycle and 20k run in a time of 4:54:24.

Other results at Emberton were:

Keith Edwards 1:07:50 15th (50-54)

Chris Wood 1:08:53 36th (35-39)

n The Speedy Beaver sprint race, also at Belvoir Castle (750m swim, 20k cycle, 5k run), saw two age group winners from the club:

Pam Batchelor 1:38:11 1st (45-49)

Sarah McKeran 1:49:01 1st (40-44)

Lastly, the Little Beaver Olympic distance race at Belvoir (1500m swim, 40k cycle, 10k run) saw Jane Needham place second in her age group (40-44) in a time of 2:55:32.

n Finally, on Saturday at the Dorney Olympic Rowing Lake near Windsor, Lawrence Webb competed in the Super Sprint race (400m swim, 21.5k cycle, 5.5k run). He came 6th in his age group (40-44) with a time of 1:07.
